Project overview
This was an extensive conservation and restoration project to Rainham Hall and its Coach House. It involved restoration which was carried out by Bakers of Danbury Heritage Builders and specialist architectural joinery work. Rainham Hall is a National Trust property. Prior to works the building was on the Historic England at Risk Register and was inaccessible to the general public.
What we did for this project
The works involved:
- 1. Structural roof repairs and re-tling
- 2. Build and install of a timber clad vertical lift shaft
- 3. Build and install of the spiral cantilevered staircase
- 4. Renovation to the main hall with full mechanical and electrical overhaul
- 5. Install of new restroom and WC facilities
- 6. Conservator decorating
- 7. External repointing and brickwork repairs to all elevations
Project results
During the project, a temporary staircase was installed to allow visitors the opportunity to see the works up close during a number of Hard Hat tours organised by Bakers of Danbury. The design of the new lift core which was located in the Grade II Listed Brew House, was designed to echo the large copper vats that were used in the 18th century brewing process. Retaining the aesthetic look and its architectural heritage was a key aspect of the project.
The renovation works allowed Rainham Hall to be removed from the Historic England at Risk Register. It was opened to the public as a cafe and community space with improved visitor facilities and disabled access. The conservation and restoration project was shortlisted for the RICS Building Conservation Awards.
